Are they failing to leaf out like usual, needles turning red, are the tips or tops bare of foliage? Do they just look unhealthy? A healthy tree will look healthy, the foliage will be richly colored and free of spots of dead areas, twigs will be flexible and show green if you scratch them with your fingernail. If you see a problem with a tree's canopy or stem, the first place to look is the surrounding soil. Trees in the urban environment are under constant stress from construction damage, soil compaction, and physical injury along with the usual host of natural pathogens. Ornamental, landscape and screening trees are often planted improperly resulting in stem decay or defective root systems that strangle the tree. Often, guying or balling cord is left tied around the stem with a similar result. The list goes on and on. It takes training and experience to diagnose unhealthy trees. Most cats will come down on their own after a day or two but in some cases involving, injury, shock or smooth bark trees they won't. You hear it all the time, 'Nobody ever found a cat skeleton in a tree.'. I can tell you, as an arborist, yes they have. If it makes your pet safer, if it brings you peace of mind, I will rescue a cat from any tree I can safely climb for a minimum charge. I like doing it.
